Reading helps you see vocabulary and grammar working together. Try to read the complete passage once before checking the translation. It is fine if you understand only the general situation at first.

Korean passage

오늘은 토요일이에요. 아침에 친구와 카페에 가요. 우리는 커피를 마시고 한국어를 공부해요. 친구는 듣기 연습을 좋아하고 저는 읽기 연습을 좋아해요. 오후에는 서점에 가서 책을 사요. 집에 돌아와서 새 책을 읽어요. 즐거운 하루예요.

English translation

Today is Saturday. In the morning, I go to a cafe with my friend. We drink coffee and study Korean. My friend likes listening practice, and I like reading practice. In the afternoon, we go to a bookstore and buy a book. I return home and read the new book. It is an enjoyable day.

Notice these patterns

The particle 와 in 친구와 means with. The form 고 in 마시고 connects drinking coffee with studying Korean. The structure 에 가서 shows going to a place and then doing another action there.

Check your understanding

  1. What day is it?
  2. Who goes to the cafe?
  3. What kind of practice does the friend like?
  4. Where do they go in the afternoon?
  5. What happens after returning home?

Read it again

Read the Korean passage aloud a second time. Cover the English translation and explain the story in your own words. On the final reading, pay attention to particles and verb endings rather than translating every word separately.
