K Dramas are full of short expressions that carry emotion. You may recognise the sound before you know the exact meaning. These expressions are useful, but many are casual. Use them with close friends or people younger than you unless you have learned the polite form.

Reactions and surprise

  1. 진짜? means Really?
  2. 대박! expresses amazement, similar to Amazing!
  3. 설마 means No way or Surely not.
  4. 그래? means Really? or Is that so?
  5. 그렇구나 means I see or So that is how it is.

Questions you hear often

  1. 왜? means Why?
  2. 뭐야? means What is it? Tone can make it curious or annoyed.
  3. 어떡해? means What should I do?
  4. 괜찮아? means Are you okay?
  5. 뭐 해? means What are you doing?

Agreement and understanding

  1. 맞아 means That is right.
  2. 알았어 means Okay or I got it.
  3. 아니야 means No or That is not it.
  4. 몰라 means I do not know.
  5. 됐어 can mean Enough, Never mind or It is okay, depending on tone.

Care and encouragement

  2. 잘했어 means You did well.
  3. 미안해 means I am sorry.
  4. 고마워 means Thank you.
  5. 보고 싶어 means I miss you.

Important: Casual Korean can sound warm between close friends but rude in the wrong relationship. Polite forms such as 괜찮아요?, 알았어요 and 고마워요 are safer when you are unsure.

Listen to the tone

The same expression can communicate affection, disbelief, irritation or humour. Watch the speaker’s face, relationship and situation. Stretching a sound can also strengthen the emotion. 진짜? may be a neutral question, while 진짜아? can sound more surprised or playful.

Practise without copying blindly

Choose three expressions and notice them across several scenes. Repeat the full line, not only the isolated word. Then create your own simple situation. This helps you understand when the expression feels natural.
